Women In Technology Becoming A Self-Taught Developer

In the most male-dominated field, the world of Engineers and Technology.

Whether we like it or not, there’s always this invisible gap between men and women, don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining or anything, I am just stating the fact, basically, my experience as a Self-Taught Developer, a woman in the world of engineers, had some confrontations along the way but regardless, I had able to overcome it, I made it, I got in, I never would have thought I would have the courage to be able to find a place of my own in this engineering world, if I made it, so can you, that I am 100% sure of.

As the world progress, the gap is becoming invisible, not just because of the changes with the society and technology, but it was all because of how the strongest women existed before us, and women who are still striving, fighting, hustling into making an impact, creating a name, promoting and encouraging other women to not be afraid anymore, to get out of your comfort zone, to not just listen but to create your voice, to write your own story, to carve your path, and to help rewrite history.

You have the power to change your life, you have everything you needed to change what was, and the ability to make and build what is, you just need a little courage, a little faith, and a little strength to keep going on your bad days, on your sick days, because you have the power to choose, to create and build your own life.

So, put your hair up in a bun, messy bun, and getting things done.

Don’t let the society’s definition of normal deprives you to be the person you wanted to become

I can hear a lot of noise saying ‘It depends on your country’ or ‘It depends on your status in life’ I get it. However, no matter how much we try to avoid, no matter how much we try not to care, we all know deep down that the invisible line exists, we were just taught at a very young age not to see it.

It doesn’t matter if you are young or not, you might as well inspire a 10yr old girl who in the future could cure cancer, you might be able to inspire a 10yr old boy who can invent the flying cars, regardless, if your words or work can reach a thousand more, or can be recognized in public or not, what matters is that you able to help someone else change his/her life, you don’t need anyone else’s validation, do as you please, your goodness and work will show off on itself.

So whatever it is that you want to pursue, whether it could be Web Development, Mobile Development, Data Science, DevOps, etc. if it feels right, then go out and do it, do everything necessary, learn anything that it requires, give it time, create a timeline, regardless if you can see a result or not in the upcoming months, keep going, do what you have to do, not seeing the result in the next 6 months, 9months, I urge you to keep going, because trust me once it works, once you see the result, I promise you it will grow exponentially, you will understand the power of compound effect.

In my personal experience, I have this disease called stubbornness, I am having a hard time accepting ‘no’, I refuse to not getting a ‘yes’, I have this never-ending patience, my brain can’t help counting all my other fingers every time I got a first ‘no’ on something, it may be a good thing for some things but it’s not on everything. I can always find a reason to go back, I can always hear my inner voice telling me ‘there must be a way’, a blessing and a curse at the same time.

Back in college, whenever we are facing big opponents, situations wherein ‘you’ve got nothing to lose’ kind of thing, and everything to gain, there lies the biggest opportunity in your lifetime, the opportunity that you rarely can have because this is where your life will have the potential to turn things around, it’s a game-changer, that when you win, you will never be the same.

And the best way to handle this is to forget everything, forget about the labels, forget about the past, forget their status, forget the titles they won, or the gender bias, because, at this moment, it is just you against them, at this moment you are equal, the only question remains is, who wants it more.

It’s always been you vs you, nothing else

Most people have this habit of looking at other people’s business instead of focusing on their own, and sometimes it will give more harm than good, a little competition is something we need to be able to move faster, but if it becomes uncontrollable and addicting, you might probably need to think things thoroughly, reflect and see things on a wide perspective.

“Personality begins where comparison leaves off. Be unique. Be memorable. Be confident. Be proud.” ~Shannon L. Alder

We shouldn’t compare ourselves to others, it’s often easier said than done, I know it’s not easy and all of us are struggling with this bad habit, especially in this social media catastrophe, but the comparison will just lead you to unhappiness, all it does is to keep you away from your goals and potentials, it will only lead you into seeing more of what you don’t have and the things that you hate about yourself, don’t fall into the trap.

You gotta need to focus on watering your grass, focus on investing more into yourself, don’t waste every minute of your time, it’s your most precious gift. Do social media detox and make it a habit, focus on your progress, keep improving on yourself day after day, be grateful for what you have, and with this habit, you’re on your way to success.

Take a swing, and see what happens

This doesn’t mean you are going to hit someone on the face though.

I got this quote from Harvey Specter from Suits, he is one of my heroes, and he is the best when it comes to living life beyond other people’s opinion, to live a life beyond expectations, to change your circumstances no matter how impossible it seems, I never could have imagined the life I have today 4yrs ago, I never thought that I can get my first Developer job in 6 months of intense learning, and I would never think I can have this so many opportunities, I can’t thank myself enough for trying, for taking the leap, no matter how impossible it was, no matter how far it was from reality, I am so glad I took the chance, I took a swing, and what happened? Well, it was one of the best decisions in my life.

“If you think I can’t kick your ass up and down this floor, take a swing and see what happens” — Harvey Specter

So when life throws you off the cliff, when people hit you with a brick, and no matter how painful it feels, get up, try again, try one more, fail again, fail better, it’s not over until you win.

Fight for your dreams, fight for the life that you want, no matter how hard it feels like if it feels like hell, keep going, keep walking, why would you want to stay in hell? Just do the job that needs to be done, it will always be difficult until it becomes easy, starting Web Development is harder than you thought, that’s why it’s not for everyone, it’s not because of the learning curve, its the will to progress, to beat the wall, to close the gap between your present self to your future self, to strive, to never accept failure, and to be stubborn enough to not accept a ‘no’.

Patience and Focus will be your solid foundation as a Self-Taught Developer

As a Developer, you will probably encounter some biases along the way, or maybe not, but in my experience, I had it several times, One of it is this job opportunity I got a year ago, I passed the exam, I passed the first interview and during the final interview I was competing with this male developer, a few days later the HR told me that I wasn’t able to get in, and I asked him why, the HR is local Filipino like me and the company is located in Australia, it’s nothing personal I just need to know the reasons so for personal improvement, and then he told me that his boss preferred to have male engineers because they are better.

It broke my heart a little bit, but I didn’t let it stop me, instead, I used it as my motivation to show them that I am capable too, the stronger the roots the higher it grows, a couple of months later I got a job, and it was way better than I was expecting.

Sometimes, life is full of surprises, you never know what lies ahead, there are no failures, all lessons needed to learn, no rejection and just redirection, life will surprise you just keep going, and do what needs to be done.

Crack the shell, and Fly

Show up that wings, chin up, show them what you are capable of, show them how it should be done.

As a Self-Taught Developer, I may not have a solid foundation from the universities in this field, but, hard work beats talent all the time, I believe that no one can beat a person who refuses to fail, with a remarkable determination, with laser focus, and with a heart of a lion.

You can be anything you want, you can do anything you want to do, there’s no stopping if you will just gonna put your mind into it, it’s time to get out of the shell ladies, let’s show everyone how strong we are, and besides, who run the world?
